Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Therapeutics and Infectious Disease Epidemiology group (TIDE) within the Department of Population Medicine (www.populationmedicine.org) as a Research Fellow. The Research Fellow will perform research under the guidance of Anjum Khurshid, MD PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Population Medicine in TIDE’s Research in Informatics, Data Integration and Emerging Technologies (RIDE) portfolio. The RIDE Research Fellow will have the opportunity to lead and participate in various biomedical informatics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) research studies related to public health informatics, data standards and interoperability, GenAI/LLM models, and real-world applications in patient-centered care. The RIDE Research Fellow will play an important role in exploring innovative and creative research topics and take responsibilities in grant preparation, including conducting background research, writing research strategy, and submitting IRB applications. Specific projects will be determined based on the Research Fellow’s background and interests. Additionally, the Research Fellow will have opportunities to interact with leading experts in the field and get experience of implementing innovative informatics projects in real-world settings.

Key Responsibilities/Duties – what you will be doing

  • Lead or participate in population health informatics, new technology applications (AI, Web3.0, etc.), and patient-centered outcomes research projects.
  • Participate in the development of grant proposals, research protocols, software development, and data analysis plans.
  • Prepare manuscripts detailing research findings and submit to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate in development of new analytic and data-sharing methods and technologies with diverse teams of internal and external experts in various fields of healthcare and biomedical informatics.
  • Explore novel data sources, data integration, and emerging technologies and their implementation in clinical and community settings and apply learnings to new and ongoing projects.
  • Present research findings within and outside of the department
  • Work closely with DPM faculty mentor to monitor progress and resolve issues that arise during the course of the research.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications – what you need to perform the job

  • Doctoral degree, such as an MD, PhD, or ScD, or in a doctoral program in health informatics, public health, health services research, or related field.
  • Knowledge of research methods and electronic databases.
  • Ability to learn techniques for analyzing complex electronic healthcare data and data standards for interoperability like FHIR and HL7 or skills in using AI/ML techniques.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with technical teams of software developers, data scientists, and project managers.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and work within budgets.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work under normal office conditions and work from home as required.
  • Work may require simultaneous use of a telephone/headset and PC/keyboard and sitting for extended durations.
  • May be required to work additional hours beyond standard work schedule.
