Principal Software Engineer – Oracle Cloud Identity  and Access Management Team (Seattle, WA)

As a member of the Identity and Access team, you will be part of a team responsible for the platform used by OCI service teams to access any resource within the Cloud. This platform is responsible for providing MFA using hardware authenticators, access management, access governance, and access enforcement. It is fundamental to OCI’s security posture and is a highly scalable system that works across hundreds of thousands of resourceswithin each of the 30+ regions worldwide.

As a Principal Software Developer, you will work on redesigning our Identity System, as well as developing new features to make access friction free while maintaining security and compliance. You will also provide technical leadership to junior engineers and will be a mentor to help grow engineering craft. Duties and tasks are varied and complex, requiring independent judgment and full competence in the area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower-level personnel. BS or MS degree and equivalent experience relevant to functional area.

What is Identity and Access Management?

The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure organization designs, builds and operates OCI services that help bring a unified, state-of-the-art, cloud native approachto Oracle OCI Native SaaS application development and operations. Our services strive to provide a simplified, developer-friendly approach to SaaS application development that promotes the "Day 1" velocity, scale, reliability, and customer experience demanded of modern cloud applications. Values are OCI's foundation and how we deliver excellence. We strive for equity, inclusion, and respect for all. We are committed to the greater good in our products and our actions. We are continually learning and taking opportunities to grow our careers and ourselves. We challenge each other to stretch beyond our past to build our future.

Are you interested in building the next generation of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) that supercharges modern cloud application development?  Do you love the idea of working in a dynamic, modern agile environment with the excitement of a start-up, but the financial backing of a Fortune 100 company? You’ll be joining an early-stage, fast-growing venture that offers a ton of autonomy and a lot of variety. This is a unique opportunity to work with smart people to solve complex problems in ageographically distributed, secure, multi-tenant cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) environment at massive scale. We’re looking for a Principal Software Development Engineer with experience in cloud service development on a modern IaaS environment. This candidate has a natural excitement for building complex, highly distributed, and reliable cloud-native services that reimagine what is possible in a cloud environment.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for engineers with distributed systems experience. You should have experience with the design of major features and launching them into production. You’ve operated high-scale services and understand how to make them more resilient. You work on most projects and tasks independently. You have experience working with services that require data to travel long distances, but have to abide by compliance and regulations. You stay up at night thinking about how to protect the service from upstream dependencies.

The ideal candidate will be technically strong and get a lot done – you’ve worked on services that are highly available, scalable, and redundant. You understand that simple systems are easier to operate and troubleshoot. You can balance speed and quality with iteration and incremental improvements. You’ve made life easier for other developers and have motivated your teams to make both process and service improvements with your ability to automate and instrument properly to get the right data. You understand operational excellence and how to instill a culture of being proactive with your teammates. You find anomalies in graphs that didn’t trip any alarms and root cause problems before they become real problems.

The person in this role will get a lot done on a daily basis, drive tactical execution of features and projects, and own feature design.

What are the biggest challenges for the team?

The biggest challenges for the team are reliability and performance. The growth of the business is driving us to improve the ability of our systems to scale out and handle traffic patterns that are several orders of magnitude greater than what we can support today.

We understand that software is living and needs investment. The challenge is making the right tradeoffs, communicating those decisions effectively, and crisp execution.

We need engineers who can build services that handle millions of requests per second. We need engineers who can figure out how we can survive regional data center outages and protect our customers. We need engineers who can build services that enable us to offer even more options to customers and contribute to the overall growth of Oracle Cloud.
