About the Position


Career Opportunity:
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Network Administration Specialist. This position implements, installs, maintains, and secures complex network and security hardware and software systems. Resolves network problems in a large network with multiple sites.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from division and department management staff.

May act as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results.

Type of Examination: A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.  The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.  

Eligible List: You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.



Selection Process: Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. 


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES


Essential Functions:

  1. Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques, and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
  2. Installs, maintains, configures, and secures network equipment including routers, switches, network management system, wireless systems, unified voice systems, and network communication systems.
  3. Installs, maintains, and configures security devices and appliances including firewalls, IDS, IPS, and internet filtering systems.
  4. Builds and secures network tunnels to external entities.
  5. Provides technical support to city staff; responds to requests for service; troubleshoots and fixes network issues in a timely manner.
  6. Develop and maintain documentation of the entire network.
  7. Assists in planning and preparing for future IT network support needs.  Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials, equipment and vendors, assisting with specifications, and requisitioning materials as needed. Evaluates the impact of new system and application software on network systems.
  8. Works with vendors on implementations of new network systems.Assists vendors in troubleshooting network problems when necessary.
  9. Assists with developing and recommending updates to department programs, policies, standards and procedures; prepares performance statistics and reports.
  10. Identifies and mitigates security risks; analyzes security reports for misuse of the network.
  11. Monitors vendors to ensure that work is completed in accordance with specifications, city policies and regulations.
  12. Performs administration duties including user account maintenance, performance monitoring, resource utilization monitoring, load balancing and performance tuning.
  13. Develop network recovery procedures to minimize system downtime; provide technical support for maintaining system reliability and availability.
  14. Provides technical training to other city staff.
  15. Serves as liaison for the department with other departments, divisions, the public and outside agencies. Provides information within the area of assignment.  Handles inquiries and complaints from start through resolution in an efficient, courteous and timely manner.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible network administration experience.


Training:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major in computer science or a related field.  Specialized training in network operating systems is desirable.

May substitute a combination of equivalent education and related experience.  The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.


Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Network administration or Internet administration certificate or training is desirable.


Special Requirement:

Certain city functions operate on a 24 hour per day, seven days per week schedule, and may require support on any shift.  May be required to respond to calls for assistance during any shift.
