Job Description

 

We are currently seeking a Lead Data Science & ML Engineer to join our team. This role will be supporting a diversity of work at the intersection of natural language processing, large language models, learning and assessment analytics, product development, and user security & safety. In this role you will be responsible for researching, developing, and experimenting on our custom predictive and statistical models, in exciting fields surrounding learning assessment, text and language understanding, behavior classification, and user analytics & privacy. You will be working closely with cross-functional teams, including data & ML engineers, software developers, and product managers to unlock important user insights and preserve quality and privacy within our core product features.

 

Key Responsibilities



  • Work with company stakeholders to deeply understand business & product problems related to educational data, analytics, and predictive modeling

  • Identify and prepare relevant structured & unstructured datasets for analysis and experimentation

  • Develop new technical capabilities for data acquisition, exploratory analysis, feature engineering, and modeling.

  • Research new machine learning algorithms & techniques to improve our current models or methodologies

  • Research, train, fine-tune, evaluate, and test machine learning models to ensure their effectiveness, reliability, and applicability for solving business goals

  • Evaluating LLM performance, identifying novel ways of extracting context from human input and LLM outputs, integrating LLMs and foundation models, tuning/engineering/load balancing LLMs to meet quality and performance benchmarks.

  • Clearly communicate results & outcomes across the company, and work with other technical staff to productionize your work

  • Stay current with new technologies and techniques in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence

  • Work alongside a talented team of entrepreneurs, engineers, subject matter experts, and external stakeholders on designing purpose-fit capabilities for our products



Qualifications



  • Advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.

  • A strong foundation in mathematics, statistical methods, and machine learning

  • Proficiency in relevant programming languages such as Python and R, as well as important frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch

  • Strong problem-solving skills across complex data-heavy domains, with a knack for critical and creative thinking

  • Experience with data visualization and using it to effectively communicate your findings

  • Experience with integrating data & reporting with large language models

  • Experience with generating data and embeddings and using vector databases for storage and lookup

  • Experience with large-scale data storage & processing and distributed systems

  • Experience in early-stage startups (or similarly-structured teams) where you’ve had to wear multiple hats and collaborate closely with multiple teams & disciplines.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a penchant for humble leadership.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
