General Description

Performs intermediate professional and technical work involving systems performance, security, patching, forecasting and monitoring, and does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision of the Information Services Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Primary responsibilities are designing, implementing, documentation, and maintaining network hardware resources and hardening network security.  Networks include City network, telephone systems, and security camera systems.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement of network security from architecture design, security patching and configuration hardening.   
  • Patches and upgrades physical servers, virtualization and network infrastructure in a timely manner.
  • Integrates and manages MFA with various systems as well as SSO (single sign on).
  • Configures and monitors network devices using modern monitoring tools.
  • Assesses network resources to forecast needs such as storage and predict future growth and plan to accommodate.
  • Gathers information and provides input/recommendations to the Information Services Manager on tactical and strategic decision making with respect to equipment, security and project forecasting.
  • Drafts professional communications to users to coordinate planned and unplanned service interruptions.
  • Assists the IT Department with general trouble tickets, hardware troubleshooting, repair and replacement as needed.
  • Creates and maintains network maps, diagrams, documentation.
  • Cross trains with other positions within IT for redundancy and familiarity with all operations.
  • Assists in resolving network and hardware problems in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Assists with afterhours calls and work as needed in emergency situations.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field with 5+ years’ work experience in maintaining information systems, computer programming operations, or networking or any combination of education and experience equivalent. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Thorough knowledge of networking, routing, switching protocols, security protocols, data storage management, and backups.  Working knowledge of physical and virtual server environments; exchange and email flow and security; and personal computer and office automation systems, software and programs.  Strong project planning, time management, analytical thinking, problem solving, and deductive reasoning skills.  Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with associates and the public. 

Physical Demands

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires fingering and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
