SUMMARY 


The Hive is the innovation lab at USA for UNHCR. Founded in 2015, The Hive's mission is to engage with the American public to raise awareness about refugees and design solutions that address their needs through technology and the data science process. The Hive is seeking a Data Scientist to help develop data science solutions as part of an innovation team to enhance the organization’s mission through fundraising analytics and models. The Data Scientist will 


play an integral role in creating The Hive’s standards for machine learning and be fully integrated in The Hive’ 


people-first approach to use and implementation of data-driven insights. 


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 



  • Assemble and analyze fundraising data sets to identify patterns in donor behavior 



  • Identify valuable data sources and collaborate with the engineering team to build pipelines 



  • Use machine learning tools for feature engineering and predictive modeling 



  • Collaborate with fundraising teams to address their business challenges 



  • Communicate data outcomes back to internal and external stakeholders 



  • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner 



  • Ensure code quality by writing clear, maintainable and testable code 



  • Conduct code reviews and providing feedback to peers 



  • Apply best practices for managing data science projects, including CI/CD pipelines 



  • Monitor and optimize performance of deployed models 



  • Engage with The Hive’s goal to drive innovation, including assessment of new technologies 



  • Work on external projects, including The Hive’s signature annual event, Innovate4Refugees 


 


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 



  • At least 2-4 years of relevant experience as a data scientist or similar role; Bachelor’s in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field; Master’s degree preferred. 



  • In lieu of education/degree requirements, a successful candidate will:

  • Strong background in implementing machine learning methods 



  • Understanding of statistical concepts 



  • Familiarity with database management and querying with SQL 



  • Experience writing and debugging code in Python 



  • Experience using data science tools such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn and visualization tools such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, D3, Tableau 



  • Ability to critically evaluate data to identify patterns and anomalies 



  • Able to communicate data results clearly, including to a non-technical audience 



  • Approach projects with analytical mindset to clearly define problem and potential solutions with a business outcome in mind 



  • Work well in a team environment, contributing to collective goals and providing constructive feedback to colleagues 



  • Adapt to learning new tools and technologies as required 



  • Demonstrates passion for USA for UNHCR’s mission 


 


WORK LOCATION 


Hybrid + New York, NY + May also involve travel to some locations within the company’s region of operations and select donor locations.
