Position Overview


The Basketball Data Scientist will assist the basketball operations department by utilizing data to provide insights to enhance decision-making across both the front office and the coaching staff. The Basketball Data Scientist will be a part of the Basketball Analytics Department.

In this role you will:



  • Design and develop tools and advanced statistical models to communicate insights to members of the organization

  • Collaborate with other members of the analytics department to creatively bring quantitative-driven research to assist in scouting, front office, coaching, performance, etc.

  • Participate in team meetings and strategy sessions, providing data-driven insights to support player development and game planning

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of data processes and user-interfaces

  • Other duties as designated by manager


Required Skills, Experience and Abilities


To perform the job successfully, you will have or demonstrate the following skills and abilities:



  • Experience working with large data in an industry, research, or sports setting

  • Practice working with large or messy data in a scripting language (Python, R)

  • Ability to build, maintain, and query data from a relational database (ideally, SQL)

  • Experience developing statistical or machine learning models using modern frameworks (Python, R, PyTorch, Keras, scikit-learn, etc.)

  • Software development skills working on ETL processes or web applications (React) are beneficial

  • An understanding and passion for the game of basketball and a knowledge of modern basketball analytics and research

  • Ability to work in a collaborative setting and communicate technical concepts to non-technical people

  • Flexibility to adapt to frequently changing work environment, and deliver on challenging demands

  • Interpersonal skills – ability to maintain confidentiality, listens to others, and willing to try new ideas

  • Excellent critical reasoning skills with the proven ability to partner across functionally and effectively build links

  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal; ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely

  • Presents self in professional manner and have ability to interact with all levels of the organization and outside contacts

  • Available to work a variable schedule, including holidays, nights, weekends, and Hornets games
